The Start…Sort Of…

Over the past few weeks (and months really) I have had countless discussions with people about my plans for this year. Most of them are about 70% confusion, as in why in the world would you ever want to do something like that, about 20% hmm I guess thats sort of cool and 10% where is Oman anyways? Now that I’m actually leaving for the program things have gotten even more mixed up. Yes, today I’m leaving. BUT my flight is on Thursday. How does that make any sense? Well before we actually head to Oman there is a two-day orientation. This orientation marks the formal beginning of the program and will help prepare us to make the transition to living in Oman.

Sounds totally straightforward except that the orientation is in DC, in DuPont Circle, approximately 20 minutes from my house. So yes, I’m leaving today. But not to Oman. To an exotic destination known as my hometown. Although I will still be close to home for the next few days I will be staying in a hotel downtown with the rest of the kids in the program so todays the day for goodbyes.

Although it’s a bit weird to be home but not able to see anyone from home I think it will be a nice half-way point before we go to the Middle East. Instead of transitioning straight from my bedroom to the Arabian Peninsula I will have a few days to adjust to being away in a city that is very familiar.

As the other members of the program fly in today I can’t help but marvel at the fact that this is actually happening. Since I was accepted into the program in April I have been looking forward to this day, with a mix of excitement and worry, and cannot wait to finally get started. For weeks I have watched my friends go off to college and heard many stories of their experiences (both the good and the bad) as I waited at home. But although I will miss my family and friends very much, I’m ready to get out there and get going! And finally do something interesting so I have something to write about on this blog 🙂 Wish me luck!

    Miriam,
Enjoy your 8 months on Dupont Circle. Hmmm..oops…misread the blog.
Have a great orientation, a fast and safe flight, and some gefilte fish upon landing —that’s a mistake too. Anyway, lots of love!
