Getting bubble tea in DuPont Circle with two other girls from the program, Kirby and Rachel

Over the past day and a half (plus tomorrow morning) we have been preparing to leave for Oman. On Tuesday afternoon my family dropped me off at the hotel and I got to meet the other six girls on my program and our program coordinator, Shino. We’ve been very busy learning about cultural norms, health and safety and even future careers at the State Department! We spent a lot of the day at the AMIDEAST headquarters (AMIDEAST is the organization that runs our branch of the NSLI-Y program, they’re very active in the region and also run several other programs) listening to lectures about what to expect once we get to Oman. We were joined by two girls who are NSLI-Y alumni and were in Oman this summer. They were very helpful in answering a lot of our questions about what it is like to be a student in Oman and what the host family experience is like.

We also visited the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center, a cultural center sponsored by the Sultanate of Oman. There we listened to a presentation about Oman and also got to visit the library they have there which contained many old manuscripts and books about the Persian Gulf.

So far it’s also been really great getting to know the other girls on the program. We’re all so excited to go to Oman and its great that we will have a core group of people to share this experience with.

Tomorrow we are visiting the Embassy of Oman in the morning and then heading off to the airport. This is my last night in America for eight months! See you on the other side!!
