Living on the Edge

Well, it’s finally happened. I am officially an illegal immigrant. Our tourist visas expired two days ago and our current residency status in the country is illegal. My bags are already packed and after school today we’re getting into an unmarked van and driving three hours across the border to the Al Ain, a city in the UAE commonly known as the human trafficking capital of the Gulf. I’m sure it will be a great trip!
The idea was that when we came back from Dubai we would get our student residency cards but they weren’t ready yet and we were given thirty-day tourist visas.
I’ve been illegal for four days now and let me tell you, it is not easy. I find myself looking over my shoulder at every unexpected sound, and I spent the weekend developing escape routes out of my house and neighborhood. This entire time I’ve been unable to find a job and have begun speaking with my friends in code. Just in case. Because you never know who could be watching.
And to anyone who’s ever considered going somewhere illegally, tread carefully. I can now say from personal experience that it is NOT easy. I mean how am I possibly supposed to enjoy my cardamom tea and Omani bread if I’m constantly having to worry about the Sultan’s police?

I certainly hope our “illegal alien” is back in Oman safely. I suppose you do not need a “green” card. Wait, Isn’t green the official color of Oman? They probably call it a “blue” card there.
    Another Miriam Adventure!
